Wireless monitoring system based on GSM loggers for transport

Private Joint-Stock Company “TERA” has been engaged in the development, production, and installation of wired and wireless automated humidity and temperature monitoring systems for pharmaceutical and food industry enterprises since 2009. All installed monitoring systems have successfully passed validation procedures at TERA’s customers’ facilities in accordance with the requirements of GMP, GDP, GCP, GPP, FDA 21 CFR (Part11), GAMP, and HACCP.

COMPONENTS OF THE WIRELESS SYSTEM

The wireless monitoring system based on GSM loggers for transport consists of the following components:

  1. Wireless GSM humidity and temperature loggers use a built-in GSM modem to transmit data to a cloud server. The logger operates according to the principle: wake up, measure, transmit, sleep. In the absence of mobile connectivity, the logger stores the collected humidity and temperature data in its own non-volatile flash memory. A high-contrast OLED display is used for indication, showing humidity and temperature values for all measurement channels. In addition, the screen displays signal strength, battery charge, and serial number. The logger comes with a rubber boot to protect it from shocks and drops and has a built-in magnetic mount. The logger has two IP67 M8 connectors for connecting one or two external Pt1000 temperature sensors or an SHT air humidity and temperature sensor. The logger also features a USB-C connector for charging the built-in battery. The replaceable 18650 lithium battery can be quickly replaced by the user when needed.
  2. Cold Chain Cloud SaaS service provides a user-friendly WEB HMI interface built on web technologies. The service is designed to perform all necessary real-time monitoring system functions — data collection, processing, visualization, and archiving of information received from sensors; alarm notifications; database storage; user and event log management; access, roles, and user rights administration; data export; report and graph generation, and more. To access the Cold Chain Cloud service, users need an Internet connection and the Google Chrome browser.

FEATURES OF THE WIRELESS SYSTEM

Advantages of the wireless monitoring system:

  • The most cost-effective option for pharmacies, vaccination points, medicine storage rooms in hospitals or clinics, and food storage areas in restaurants or cafés — that is, wherever monitoring is required for one or several points within a single room.
  • Wireless transmitters are easy to install and remove thanks to magnetic mounting; the system can be easily relocated to another site if necessary.
  • Simple installation that can be performed by the user personally.
  • The wireless system can be used for equipment and room mapping (critical point identification).

Disadvantages of the wireless monitoring system:

  • The radio signal from the transmitter can be blocked by external obstacles (pallets with goods, walls, etc.) or by radio interference in the air.
  • The transmission range of the radio signal from the transmitter to the coordinator inside a building, without direct line of sight, is no more than 50–100 m.
  • Battery charge depends on the polling interval of the transmitter (the more frequent the polling, the faster the battery discharges).
  • The practical polling period for transmitters is no more than once per minute; the recommended interval is once every 5 or 10 minutes.
  • It is necessary to pay a monthly subscription fee for access to the Cold Chain Cloud service and for mobile Internet.
